The <After the Exhibition> project unfolds as the story following a limited-time exhibition, created for those who missed the initial exhibition. It extends beyond the previous exhibition, expanding into my own space and perspective, an experimental continuation of the art. Within the pages of an art book lies a personal exhibition, transcending the confines of time and space, offering comfort within one's own state of mind.

โ€˜A Piece of Exhibitionโ€™, curated by Pokettales, stands as a special edition introducing the artist and project. It acts as a sample, aiding in grasping the texture, materiality, and color of the artwork, surpassing the limitations of a book. This extension of the exhibition explores our viewpoint and spatial perception, building upon the foundation of the previous showcase.

The <After the Exhibition> project unveils Lim Soon Nam's catalog <Daily Sensation>, showcasing 13 sculptures. The exhibition centers around the theme 'The People Whom I Encountered, Mongolia', drawn from the collection featured in <En Route> project conducted in Mongolia back in 2014. It showcases pieces that capture the personas encountered in Mongolia, reflecting the artist's unique perspective and sensory impressions.

The ethereal imagery, like a delicate film atop water, evokes hazy yet enduring memories from brief encounters. The skin and eye textures and colors portrayed within these artworks stem from the artist's personal recollections, transcending mere realistic depictions. These portraits not only convey the initial impressions of the faces but also seem to encapsulate the surrounding air, temperature, and scent of the soil from the time of those encounters.

The catalog titled "<Daily Sensation>" meticulously curates artworks from the last decade belonging to this series, showcasing Lim Soon Nam's distinct artistic journey.

Artist Lim Soon Nam integrates the fleeting images of numerous individuals shared daily across social media feeds, presenting the intimate unfolding of strangers' faces before our eyes. She incorporates reproduced digital images such as selfies from personal profiles on social networking sites into her portrait paintings. Additionally, her creative inspiration is drawn from still life scenes of everyday existence and snapshots capturing various travel destinations. Her approach encapsulates the essence of daily encounters, characterized by a swift sense of drawing that captures the tactile motions and actions of everyday life. Rather than rigidly reproducing objects through painting, Lim Soon Nam employs an intuitive and sensory interpretation method, focusing on the immediacy of experience.

The artist's unique style, characterized by distinct hand strokes, delicate touches, and a familiar color palette, underwent deconstruction into six palm-sized square surfaces. Through the meticulous process of disassembling and reassembling the figurative elements within the painting, the abstraction was heightened, resulting in a metamorphosed artworkโ€”an image sculpture that embodies a three-dimensional presence within a structured cube form.

Q: This exhibition initiates from two books. In Particular, the pieces from the <En Route> project will be displayed at Pokettales. Could you share the narrative behind this project?

A:
The book <En Route> is a collaborative book authored by five artists and the planner involved in the 2014 Nomadic Residency in Mongolia, facilitated by Art Council Korea. This project stands as an artistic book, resembling a report on the residency exhibition, amalgamating distinct moments and encounters in Mongolia captured through each artist's unique creative approach. It's almost like an exhibition encapsulated within the pages of a book.

Q: I'm curious about your current perspective and personal impressions of the works, especially looking at  them after a considerable amount of time has passed since your last project.

A:
The book features portraits of individuals I had the pleasure of meeting during my stay at the Nomadic Residency in Mongolia, complemented by captivating photographs showcasing the varied landscapes of the country. As I revisit this work in the present, it brings to mind precious and meaningful moments from my time in Mongolia, filling me with immense happiness as I prepare to share this project through an exhibition. The Mongolia Nomadic Residency unexpectedly became a deeply treasured gift to me.

Q: Is there a connection between the colors representing Mongolia in the photos and the skin tones of the people portrayed in your work?

A
: After returning to Korea, I started this art book project. Memories of traveling to Mongolia naturally came to mind while creating portraits based on people I met in Ulaanbaatar and the Gobi Desert, during the Nomadic Residency.Taking into account the environmental context in which Mongolian people live, my aim was to capture the unique essence of the expansive landscapes and arid atmosphere, all the while focusing on depicting the distinct characteristics of the individuals within my paintings.

Q: The figures in this exhibition have a delicate and translucent quality when observed up close. Was there a specific intention behind this texture?

A:
I concentrate on capturing the delicate and fragile nuances of the human face. I observe the self-expressions that evoke the unique contours of each face, using these experiences as inspiration for my portrait paintings.

Encountering commonly seen digital human images superficially displayed across the web has driven my artistic motivation. Skepticism arose from these easily consumed images, lacking the depth and true essence inherent in the human face. I strive to pay attention to the subtle emotions overlooked in images, imagining and incorporating the missing elements.

Instead of seeking an exact replica of the subject through painting, I approach my art as if I'm sketching swiftly, guided by an intuitive and sensory interpretation. This creative process involves a careful focus on the chemical interplay between paint and oil, highlighting pictorial elements such as brushstrokes, variations in color, and textures. I strongly feel that this approach plays a significant role in shaping the unique and distinct character of my paintings.

Q: People find your colors particularly captivating. Are there specific aspects you prioritize when working with color?

A
: I work with a limited color palette to accentuate the sense of form. Typically, I rely on light huesโ€”primarily black, white, with occasional hints of red. Sometimes, I adjust colors based on the material, either adding or subtracting to achieve the desired effect. To delicately manage variations in color and texture stemming from the paint's physical properties, I focus on color temperature. I prefer working in ample natural light, which I find to be a crucial factor in handling these subtleties.

Q: Since you've been primarily portraying people for a while, could you share what has captured your attention lately?

A:
Lately, my inspiration stems from time at a warm summer destination during winter time, leading me to explore tropical plants as my current motif.

My artistic process involves observing the unique contours of exotic tropical plants, contemplating the shifts between seasons, and the evolving shapes they takeโ€”be it their graceful bloom or their delicate wilt and droop.

Furthermore, I've been constructing a flexible canvas that plays with the perception of perspective in my artworks.

Q: Could you share the main sensations or feelings you aim to evoke through the <Daily Sensation> art book and the 'A Piece of Exhibition' part of the 'After the Exhibition Project' by Pokettales?

A
: Appreciation often relies on the subjective experience of each viewer. However, it would be wonderful if both the exhibition, 'A Piece of Exhibition' and the book could evoke tangible sensationsโ€”something that can almost be felt at one's fingertipsโ€”to stimulate the imagination.
